Sting has signed on to headline Philadelphia's Academy of Music 153rd Anniversary Concert on January 30th. He'll perform with his own four-piece band -- including longtime guitarist Dominic Miller, and former E Street Band keyboardist David Sancious on piano -- as well as with the Philadelphia Orchestra conducted by David Hartley. According to the press release, Sting's set will feature both solo and Police songs performed with the band and orchestra.
Sting has performed throughout the years with small rock combos -- like the Police, solo, and with larger more jazz-based bands as well. He says that there are certain subtleties needed when playing with a large amount of musicians: "With a large band, it's a question of not having everybody play at the same time. You know, there are moments when they have to just be tacit and listen and then take their turn. Dynamics are important with a big band, you know, 'cause it can be overpowering if everybody is playing. To be able to play quietly, very quietly, and also very loud, I think the dynamics are important."
