Listen Live! Frequently Asked Questions and Answers

Having problems launching the Smooth Jazz Detroit Listen Live! Streaming Audio?
*
You may have a pop-up blocker, which is blocking the pop-up window that contains the code that links your Windows Media Player to our streaming audio. If you heard your computer make a "bloop" noise when you clicked on the link, then you have pop-ups blocked. Please allow pop-ups for this page. Please check into your web browser's settings to disable the pop-up blocker for this website. Many pop-up blockers will let you specify which site you will allow pop-ups on. You will often see a bar at the top of your browser window in Microsoft Internet Explorer. Right clicking on that bar will bring up a menu to select your pop-up permission for this page.

*The Listen Live "player" is a Flash skin in a pop-up box. If you don't see it, you may need the latest Flash player for your browser. Click here to get it for free from Adobe. If you don't have administration privileges on your computer at work, you may need your IT person/department's help in upgrading Flash (which they should do anyway as most sites now use Flash and well over 90 percent of users have the free player installed).

More questions and answers:

Q.
How can I listen to Smooth Jazz V98.7 on the radio?
A. All you need is an HD Radio! Smooth Jazz V98.7 HD2 is where you can find us. HD Radio is 100% subscription free and radios now start at $49.99! Get information at this link.

Q. I used to be able to listen online outside of the US but can't any longer.
A. As of February, 2010, due to music royalty licensing issues, we can no longer stream outside of the US.

Q. I have a Macintosh system at work/home/school. How do I listen to Smooth Jazz Detroit in a MacOS environment?
A.
Currently Smooth Jazz Detroit Listen Live! is available in Windows Media format only. Please download and install the new free Telestream Flip4Mac player which plays Microsoft Media streams using your Quicktime player. Click here for Flip4Mac.

Q. I click on the "listen" button and nothing happens.
A.
If you are attempting to listen at work, check with your system administrator about firewall rules. Some companies' security measures prevent access to online radio stations and other streaming media.
Also, some firewall software requires you to designate what audio/video streams you will allow. Check your software instruction manual or help file to determine what settings you have to adjust.

Q. I am on dial-up and your station doesn't play online or it constantly breaks up.
A.
Usually when this occurs, you will see "buffering" displayed. The player is trying to receive the data packets containing the audio so it can play it smoothly. Unfortunately, some dial-up connections are not optimized enough to get our stream efficiently.

Q. I'm on DSL or Cable Internet and I see buffering and the station breaks up.
A.
Check your modem and network settings. One or the other may not be working correctly.

Q. I get an error page in the pop-up window when I try to listen online.
A.
It could be a temporary Internet problem or one of the intermediate servers the stream data has to go through around the country before it gets to you is down. Please try again later.

Q. I don't get a stand alone player in my web browser and the audio goes away when I go to another page. What can I do?
A. Javascript must be enabled in your web browser. It is by default but some forget they've turned it off for one reason or another. The player requires a line of javascript to resize into its own window that can be minimized if needed so you can continue to browse the web while listening.

Q. I get annoying clicks while listening. What can I do?
A.
Go into Windows' Control Panel to  your System Sound Settings (Sounds & Multimedia). Scroll down...Under Window Explorer find Start Navigation. Change the sound to "none" and apply, OK.

Q. Why are the times given by the air personalities off by a minute or so?
A.
That's due to the time it takes to compress the audio stream for the Internet and the route the data packets take to get through the Internet to you.

Q. Why can't I find the name of a song I heard online in Tune Genie?
A.
Tune Genie only displays songs played from our air studio that are broadcast on-the-air on regular FM & HD Radio. Due to clearance and contractual limitations, we can not air some commercials, traffic and news reports and special programming online. We cover those with bonus songs, which means more music for you. However those songs unfortunately can not be listed in Tune Genie at this time due to technical complications. The song you heard online but can't find in Tune Genie was probably one of the bonus songs.

Q. I can't get your stream to play in my Firefox browser. It does play OK in Internet Explorer.
A.
Your Firefox browser may be missing the Windows Media Player Plug-in. Check this link for info on how to get your Windows Media Player plug-in to work in Firefox so you can listen to online radio. http://kb.mozillazine.org/Windows_Media_Player
